I have always loved Pac-Man.  I wish I knew they were doing this, I would've entered the contest.

“Pac-Man Championship Edition,” containing the first new mazes in 26 years, is unveiled by the original game creator at the Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Championship.

NEW YORK — One of the most beloved video games of all time received a surprise makeover this week.

The now-famous “Pac-Man” was created in 1981 by NAMCO
game designer Toru Iwatani, and quickly became a global phenomenon.  This week, the top 10 players in the world were invited to New York City to compete at the first-ever Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Championship.

The 10 contestants knew they faced some tough competition at the event. What they didn’t know is that they would also be the first gamers in the world to play the new “Pac-Man Championship Edition” game, designed by Iwatani and featuring the first new Pac-Man mazes in more than 26 years.

The event was capped off with Iwatani crowning the first Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Champion—Carlos Romero, a 27-year-old man from Pachuca, Mexico.

Romero, who has been playing Pac-Man since 1986, achieved a final score of 222,160.
Romero beat out Robert Glashuettner of Austria to claim the title of Pac-Man World Champion. The two players played one five-minute round of the new “Championship Mode” created exclusively for the competition.

The new mazes, with names like “Darkness,” “Freeway” and “Patience and Reward,” are likely to be a big hit with gamers worldwide. The new game will be available exclusively on Xbox LIVE Arcade on the Xbox 360, beginning June 6.

In a press release, “Pac-Man Championship Edition” is described as “the same beloved ‘Pac-Man’ game played in pizza parlors and arcades of the ’80s, but updated with new features that former “Pac-Man” fanatics and new generations of fans alike will love.” The game will be rated “E for Everyone” and will cost 800 "Microsoft Points" in Xbox LIVE Arcade.
New game twists include mazes that dynamically change shape during gameplay, new audio soundtracks, high-definition (HD) graphics and six new timed-game modes. (See a slide show with photos and descriptions of the new Pac-Man mazes)
